There is a very simple patch, assuming you don't care about the improved security in Java I had such an environment variable which was setting the heap size to 1 GB. I am avoiding running eclipse just to edit jasper reports as long as I can. I tried running ireport 5. Adding the jdkhome did it for me. So to be understandable:

This is really a much better solution than installing JDK7. But when I try to start the iReport it shows the splash screen but does not start.

Now it's working after changing the jdkhome. Then I tried to download java 7 but oracle allows only oracle customers to download it!
